How my best friend and I played 234 holes of FREE golf at two of the nicest golf courses in the country: Troon North Golf Club & The Boulders Resort & Spa, just outside Scottsdale, Arizona. How we flew for free on Southwest with golf clubs, round-trip from DEN to PHX. How we rented a Mustang convertible for free. How we stayed in a 2-bedroom Villa at a largely discounted rate.
This is the story of two best friends, traveling more for less, doing what they love…
WARNING: this lengthy, detailed blog and vlog post contains humor, a very red beard, jumping Cholla, embarrassing golf video footage of @BenTheTravelCoach, a Javelina interrupting our game, beautiful photos, and the usual “how to travel more for less” analysis so you too can create similar memories. Enjoy!
DID YOU KNOW… That there is a type of Cactus that literally jumps off of itself and “attacks” things… I warned Carson about this, but he didn’t believe me. He learned the hard way…
Let’s back up and start at the beginning: 2 Round-Trip tickets from DEN to PHX (2 free bags each – golf clubs count) were covered using Southwest Rapid Rewards Points. Here’s a snippet from that:
Rental Car: Covered with points accrued from our business credit card. Free upgrade based on being Executive Elite with National Rental Car. Ask me about how to get this status with National before your first ever day renting from them.
How We Played Free Golf All Week: If you haven’t already, check out my post on How To Maximize Credit Card Benefits. I used the same strategy for 2017 as I did for 2016. We paid for one round each at Troon North. Rates for this course typically run at least $150 per person. We paid $61.52 total.
And here are some snapshots of our experience playing Scottsdale Golf: Troon North Golf Club & The Boulders Resort & Spa
What? I’m supposed to be good at golf just because it seems like I play a lot? This is the kind of stuff that keeps me coming back!!
A funny one, two combo shot here…
Here’s what it looks like when you have to immediately start running after your ball after you hit it, in order to see where it may end up…
Five more short video clips and then details on accommodations at the Boulders Resort & Spa:
How we stayed at Arizona’s #1 top rated, 5-star resort for 4 nights without spending an arm and a leg: There’s nothing too special about this. We took advantage of a 4th night free promotion and we visited in July…the desert in July… and it just so happened prices were down! I did negotiate an upgrade from a Casita to a 2-bedroom Villa which was super cool. They came with a garage and we were allowed to keep a golf cart in there. Also, this meant that Carson and I didn’t need to share any bedroom space – woo-hoo! We purchased all our food at the local Safeway and cooked at home. I used the Spa’s fitness center three separate times. I also enjoyed a few hours at the pool. See details below:
